Seychelles

A thousand miles off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles islands redefine the notion of “getting away from it all.” Located near the equator, the Republic of Seychelles comprises 115 islands that are far removed from the usual sailing routes. Coral atolls and pristine white sand beaches beckon, with warm azure waters inviting you to explore. The vibrant coral reefs beneath the crystal-clear waters are a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

Sunsail’s base is well-equipped to ensure a comfortable start and end to your adventure. Our facilities include an ATM, shops, a swimming pool, a restaurant, a cafeteria, a bar, and a souvenir shop. For a small deposit, you can also access the marina’s shower and toilet facilities.

The lush, mountainous islands are home to unique bird species found nowhere else in the world. Giant tortoises nest on the soft sandy beaches, while verdant jungles entice you to hike their trails. Ninety per cent of Seychelles’ population lives on the main island of Mahé. While a few resorts are scattered across the islands, many islands remain uninhabited, like pearls spread on a cobalt cloth, awaiting you and your boat.

Sailing in the Seychelles offers a mix of open-water crossings between island clusters and line-of-sight navigation within island groups. Tides are moderate, and the breezes are relatively constant. While currents can be strong in narrows entering lagoons and other constrictions, they pose little concern throughout most islands.

National parks and marine preserves protect half of Seychelles’ territory. You could cruise among the inner islands for weeks and still have more to explore. Starting from the Sunsail Base in Mahé, the Sainte-Anne Marine National Park is just a short hop across two miles of sparkling water. Snorkel the reefs and swim with Hawksbill turtles, or look for green turtles grazing over the expansive seagrass meadows. Sainte-Anne is one of six islands in the park, each worth a visit.

Venturing from Mahé and the Sainte-Anne park, head to Curieuse Island and its national park, featuring a tortoise sanctuary, a Coco de Mer forest, and more exquisite snorkelling and beaches. Curieuse is part of a cluster of islands about twenty miles northeast of Mahé. Praslin offers miles of pristine beaches, restaurants, resorts, hiking trails, and fantastic snorkelling and diving. Just to the east lies La Digue and Anse Source d’Argent, one of the most picturesque beaches in the world.

These are just a few of the inner islands, capable of filling many vacations. The outer islands, though requiring longer sails, promise isolation and adventure for those willing to journey farther. No matter where you sail in the Seychelles, expect serene, endless natural beauty and unforgettable memories.

Seychelles International Airport is just five minutes from the charter base by taxi. Direct flights are available from a few European cities, but most travelers will need connections. While the journey takes time, the destination is well worth the effort.
