Thailand

For an unparalleled sailing adventure, begin your journey on the island of Phuket in Thailand. Southeast Asia, rich with ancient culture and history, offers a stark contrast to the more familiar sailing grounds of Europe and North America. With breathtaking limestone formations and lush jungle islands, each anchorage presents an invigorating new experience. Crystal-clear waters, exceptional diving and snorkelling, and coastal villages steeped in tradition, where you can immerse yourself in local customs and cuisine, make every Thailand sailing expedition truly extraordinary.

Sunsail’s base at Ao Po Grand Marina provides everything you need to kickstart an unforgettable adventure, including a bar and restaurant, a nearby hotel with a pool, provisioning services, and shower facilities.

Phuket, located on Phang Nga Bay off the Andaman Sea, is surrounded by national parks and 130 islands scattered like gems across the bay’s emerald waters. Whether anchored between towering limestone pillars offshore or nestled in a harbour on Phuket or the mainland, there’s always something intriguing to discover. Phuket island itself is brimming with coastal villages and towns offering dining and shopping, along with thrilling excursions into inland natural parks with forests and waterfalls.

Sailing north from the Sunsail base, head to Phanak Island to explore its caves and the Ao Phang-Nga National Park. This protected area spans 155 square miles of sea and land, encompassing caves, archaeological sites, beaches, mangroves, reefs, and abundant wildlife.

Further north lies Ko Hong, where you can anchor amidst stunning spires and explore beaches, jungles, and reefs. Just a bit further north is Khao Phing Kan, known as “James Bond Island,” famous for its appearance in “The Man With the Golden Gun.” It’s a popular tourist spot, and the striking geography that attracted filmmakers remains breathtaking.

In the heart of Phang Nga Bay are Yao Noi and Yao Yai, two larger, more developed islands surrounded by beaches and dotted with numerous resorts and restaurants. These islands offer a delightful change of pace from the raw natural beauty of the national parks and smaller islands.

To the south and east of Phuket, you’ll find many smaller islands. Some, like the Phi Phi Islands, are developed and offer a wide range of land and water activities. White sand beaches and sparkling waters are even more plentiful in the south, though the islands are more spread out. Don’t miss the eastern shore of Phang Nga Bay, home to more beautiful national parks, beaches, and anchorages.

Most travellers fly into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, which hosts many international flights daily. From there, they take a connecting flight to Phuket’s airport, about 35 minutes from the Sunsail base.
